Their eldest child, Arthur, was living with Reginald’s brother and his wife. His wife had died the year before after the birth of twins, who also did not survive. At the time of the 1911 census, just a few years before Laurie’s birth in 1914, he was living in Stroud with his three young daughters, Marjorie aged 8, Dorothy aged 6, Phyllis aged 4 and a housekeeper. Laurie’s father was Reginald Joseph Lee, a grocer’s manager in his civilian life before he joined the Army during the First World War. To begin, I’ll tell you something about Laurie’s family.

It is also full of wonderful stories about memorable characters who lived in a village that was about to change irrevocably, as motor cars opened it up to the outside world. A book that has stayed in my mind, long after I first read it during my teenage years, is the classic memoir, Cider with Rosie by Laurence Edward Alan “Laurie” Lee, MBE, an English poet, novelist, and screenwriter.
